How to convert iMovie to DaVinci Resolve

Convert an iMovie for Mac project to DaVinci Resolve. Drag your iMovie library onto this page and download a .drp project free DaVinci Resolve opens with the cuts, trims, cutaways, sound, volume, fades, speed changes, transitions and titles.

  1. Find your iMovie library

Your iMovie library is in the Movies folder of your home folder, called iMovie Library unless you renamed it. In Finder, choose Go > Home, open Movies and drag the library onto this page. The file picker can't open a library, so drag it. Quit iMovie first so the library holds your latest changes.

  2. Drop it here and convert

Every project in the library is read, with the media it uses. To convert only some, untick the others under Projects. To link the media, hold Option in Finder, right-click the library, choose Copy as Pathname and paste it into Library location. Skip it and the clips open offline, ready to relink. The preview shows each project's timeline before you download.

  3. Open it in DaVinci Resolve

In Resolve's Project Manager, choose File > Import Project and open the project. Each iMovie project becomes a timeline.

iMovie library and DaVinci Resolve project, explained

An iMovie library is a folder of databases, and each project in it is stored as Final Cut Pro's own timeline. CutConvert reads those records on your computer and rebuilds the timeline with the same cuts, connected clips and audio. We checked it against nine test projects made in iMovie 10.4.5: every frame of every project lands where iMovie plays it. iMovie's title styles, Ken Burns moves and clip filters have no match in DaVinci Resolve, so titles come across as plain text, photos sit still and filters are listed by name.

iMovie can't export to DaVinci Resolve. Drag your iMovie library here and Resolve opens each project as a timeline. No Final Cut Pro needed. It is free to start, encrypted in transit, and converts a whole batch into one ZIP — sign in when you need large, high-volume jobs.

iMovie to DaVinci Resolve FAQ

Can iMovie export to DaVinci Resolve?

No. iMovie's only export to another editor is Send Movie to Final Cut Pro, which needs Final Cut Pro 12 or later. This page reads the iMovie library itself, so you don't need Final Cut Pro.

Where is my iMovie library?

In the Movies folder of your home folder, called iMovie Library unless you renamed it. Finder shows it as one file. Drag that onto the page. If you keep libraries elsewhere, iMovie shows the library's name in its sidebar.

Why do my clips come in offline?

The media is inside the library, and a browser can't see where the library is on your Mac. Paste the library's location (Option, right-click, Copy as Pathname) before converting and the clips link. Or relink them to the files in the library's Original Media folders.

What doesn't carry over?

iMovie's title styles and animations, Ken Burns moves, clip filters, themes and the picture-in-picture dissolve. Titles keep their words and timing, photos come across still, and the download lists everything that changed.

Can I convert an iMovie project from my iPhone?

Not directly. In iMovie for Mac, choose File > Import iMovie iOS Projects to bring the iPhone project into a library, then drop that library here.

Is it free?

The free limit (500 KB) counts the projects you convert, not your video, so several short projects fit. Untick the projects you don't need to stay under it. Over it, a library is a one-time $9 conversion or a Pro plan.

Guides for this workflow

Questions, answered

Where are my files processed?

In your browser. The file never leaves your computer, and CutConvert only records that a conversion happened. We never see, store, sell or share your media.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Files up to about an hour of footage convert free on every converter. CapCut projects are free up to 500 KB. Guests get five conversions a month; a free account has no monthly cap within the free size caps. Bigger files are $2 each, or $5 for a project conversion from one program to another ($9 into or out of CapCut). Pro is $12 a month ($120 a year) for files up to 50 MB. Studio is $24 a month ($240 a year) for files up to 500 MB.

What do I get when I convert multiple files?

One ZIP with every converted file. A single file comes back on its own. Press + to add more output formats: they go in the same ZIP, and each file still counts as one conversion.

Which formats are supported?

Projects in: Premiere .prproj, DaVinci Resolve .drp, Avid AAF and bins, Final Cut FCPXML, CapCut drafts and Audition sessions. Projects out: FCP7 XML, FCPXML, Resolve .drp, AAF, CapCut and REAPER, plus CMX 3600 EDL and shot-list CSV. Transitions, markers, titles, keyframes, levels, speed changes and nested sequences carry over wherever the target app can hold them. Captions: SRT, WebVTT, SBV, ASS, TTML, DFXP, iTT, SCC, MCC, EBU-STL, Avid caption TXT, timed CSV, Word and plain text. Transcripts: Whisper, WhisperX, AssemblyAI, Deepgram, Rev.ai and CapCut JSON, Premiere transcript JSON and .prtranscript, and Rev, Otter and Word-style text. Styling, placement and speakers come along where the output supports them.

Can I pick a frame rate?

Yes. For EDL and Avid caption output, choose 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97 or 30 fps, or let CutConvert detect it from your source.

Can CutConvert translate my titles?

Yes. Translate titles turns the titles, lower thirds and captions in a Premiere, Resolve, Final Cut, Avid or CapCut project into 80+ languages, with one ready-to-edit sequence per language. Only the on-screen text is sent to be translated, and the project file stays on your computer. Machine translation. Check with a fluent speaker before publishing. One project costs from $5, and Pro and Studio include it.
