How to convert FCPXML to XML

Convert a Final Cut Pro project to Premiere Pro online.   1. Export FCPXML from Final Cut Pro

    In Final Cut Pro choose File → Export XML, pick the current version (1.10 or later; 1.8 and up are read), and save the .fcpxml. A .fcpxmld bundle works too: drop the Info.fcpxml inside it.

  2. Add the .fcpxml and convert

Premiere Pro has never read FCPXML, and Final Cut Pro stopped writing the FCP7 XML that Premiere does read when version 10 shipped. The usual bridge is a paid utility. This converter reads the FCPXML directly: the format resource sets the frame rate, each asset supplies the media path, the spine is the primary storyline, and connected clips are placed from their lane and their offset relative to the parent clip. Rational times are snapped to the frame grid and anything off the grid is reported. What is not read is reported too: transitions become hard cuts at the clip boundaries, titles and generators are skipped, effects, retimes and keyframes are dropped, markers are not carried, and a compound clip is flattened one level when its media is in the file. Multicam and synchronized clips are read as their first angle.

FCPXML to XML FAQ

Does Premiere Pro open FCPXML directly?

No. Premiere Pro imports FCP7 XML (the older <xmeml> format) and has no FCPXML importer. This converter writes that FCP7 XML from the FCPXML.

Which FCPXML versions are read?

FCPXML 1.8 through 1.13, which covers Final Cut Pro 10.4 to the current release. Older files exported by Final Cut Pro X 10.0 to 10.3 usually work as well; the elements used here have not changed.

Where do connected clips end up?

The primary storyline is V1 (and A1 for its audio). A connected clip on lane 1 lands on V2, lane 2 on V3, and so on; audio lanes below the storyline become A1, A2 and so on. Offsets are resolved relative to the parent clip, the way Final Cut positions them.

What happens to transitions?

They become hard cuts and the conversion says so. The clip boundaries are kept where Final Cut had them, so the transition can be re-added in Premiere at the same point.

Are titles, effects and markers carried?

No. Titles and generators have no media file and are skipped; effects, retimes, colour and keyframes are not read; markers and keywords are left out. Each is reported in the conversion warnings so nothing goes missing silently.

Will Premiere find the media?

Each clip carries the absolute media path from the FCPXML asset (Windows paths are converted). If the footage moved, Premiere shows its Link Media dialog and relinks by file name.

Is the project uploaded?

No. The FCPXML is read and the XML is written in your browser. Only the size and the result are metered.

Can I pick a frame rate?
