VEGAS Pro to DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro or Final Cut
By Greg Thompson, Founder, CutConvertPublished
CutConvert can't convert VEGAS projects (.veg) yet. You may not need it. VEGAS Pro exports the timeline for Resolve with File > Export > Final Cut Pro 7/DaVinci Resolve (*.xml), and Resolve imports it with File > Import > Timeline. The same menu exports FCPXML for Final Cut Pro and a project for Premiere Pro. For Avid, CutConvert turns the XML into an AAF.
No VEGAS to export from? Drop the .veg below to request a converter.
Drop your VEGAS Pro project to request it
CutConvert can't convert .veg files yet. Each project dropped here counts as a vote for building a converter. The file stays on your computer. We record its file type and size, not its contents.
VEGAS Pro can hand your edit to DaVinci Resolve itself. File > Export > Final Cut Pro 7/DaVinci Resolve (*.xml) writes the timeline as XML, and Resolve imports it. The same menu exports for Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro. What CutConvert can't do yet is read the .veg file, which matters when VEGAS isn't installed any more or won't open the project.
What VEGAS Pro can export
VEGAS's File > Export menu has four project exports. The VEGAS Pro 2026 manual lists them, and the VEGAS Pro 21 help has the same list.
| Export | For | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Final Cut Pro 7/DaVinci Resolve (*.xml) | DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro | The one VEGAS names for Resolve |
| Final Cut Pro X (*.fcpxml) | Final Cut Pro | |
| Premiere/After Effects | Premiere Pro, After Effects | A Premiere project |
| EDL Text File (*.txt) | Another VEGAS | VEGAS's own text format, not a CMX3600 EDL |
VEGAS shows a report when parts of the project can't be exported. Current versions have no AAF export, so Avid Media Composer has no direct route.
Move a VEGAS project to DaVinci Resolve
- *In VEGAS Pro, choose File > Export > Final Cut Pro 7/DaVinci Resolve (.xml).** Save the .xml with your media.
- Read the export report for anything VEGAS left out.
- In DaVinci Resolve, choose File > Import > Timeline and pick the .xml. The clips link to your media where VEGAS had it. Relink anything you've moved since.
The free version of Resolve imports XML too.
Final Cut Pro, Avid and CapCut
- Final Cut Pro. Use VEGAS's Final Cut Pro X export. If Final Cut won't take it, export the Final Cut Pro 7 XML instead and drop it on FCP7 XML to Final Cut Pro.
- Avid Media Composer. Export the XML and drop it on FCP7 XML to Avid AAF. Media Composer imports the AAF.
- CapCut. Drop the XML on FCP7 XML to CapCut and copy the project folder into CapCut's drafts.
- A whole Resolve project. FCP7 XML to a DaVinci Resolve project writes a .drp that opens with the media pool filled.
Those CutConvert pages are named for Premiere Pro, and they read any Final Cut Pro 7 XML. We haven't tested VEGAS's XML in them yet. If one fails, drop the .veg in the box above so we know.
Captions and subtitles
VEGAS writes an SRT with Tools > Scripting > Export Closed Captioning for YouTube, per the VEGAS Pro 21 help. Resolve and Premiere Pro import SRT directly. From the SRT, CutConvert makes editable Final Cut titles, Avid SubCap TXT or broadcast SCC.
When you only have the .veg
Each export above needs a working VEGAS that opens the project. If your VEGAS has lapsed, or a newer VEGAS than yours saved the project, the .veg can be stuck. It's a binary file that only VEGAS reads, and CutConvert can't read it yet.
Whether we build a .veg reader depends on how many people need one. Drop your .veg in the box above and we count it. VEGAS Movie Studio projects (.vf) count too.
FAQ
Can DaVinci Resolve open a VEGAS Pro project? Not the .veg file. Export the timeline from VEGAS with File > Export > Final Cut Pro 7/DaVinci Resolve (*.xml), then import it in Resolve with File > Import > Timeline.
Does the free version of DaVinci Resolve import VEGAS XML? Yes. Free Resolve imports Final Cut Pro 7 XML timelines. No Studio license is needed.
Can I export a VEGAS Pro project to Premiere Pro? Yes. VEGAS's File > Export menu has a Premiere/After Effects option, and its Final Cut Pro 7 XML also imports in Premiere Pro with File > Import.
Does VEGAS Pro export an EDL? It exports an EDL Text File, but it's VEGAS's own format. The VEGAS manual says these EDLs aren't meant for exchange with other editors. Use the XML export instead.
Can VEGAS Pro export AAF for Avid? Not in current versions. Export Final Cut Pro 7 XML and convert it to an AAF with CutConvert, then import the AAF in Media Composer.
Can CutConvert convert a .veg file? Not yet. Drop it in the request box on this page and we count it. The file stays on your computer; we record only its type and size.
