Camtasia to Premiere Pro

By Greg Thompson, Founder, CutConvertPublished

CutConvert can't convert Camtasia projects (.tscproj or .cmproj) yet. Camtasia has no export that Premiere Pro opens as a timeline either. What moves today is a rendered MP4 and the captions, which Camtasia exports as SRT, VTT or SAMI with Export > Export Captions. Premiere Pro and Resolve import the SRT directly. CutConvert makes editable Final Cut titles or Avid SubCap TXT from it.

Want the edit itself? Drop your project below to request a converter.

CutConvert can't convert .tscproj files yet. Each project dropped here counts as a vote for building a converter. The file stays on your computer. We record its file type and size, not its contents.

Camtasia has no project export for Premiere Pro. TechSmith's export guide lists video, GIF and audio files, uploads and SCORM packages, and no XML, EDL or AAF. So a Camtasia edit reaches Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro as a rendered video, with its captions as a separate file. CutConvert can't convert the project file (.tscproj, or a .cmproj on a Mac) yet.

What Camtasia can export

ExportWhere it isUse in another editor
MP4, WebM, GIF or M4AExport > Local FileImport as media. The edit is flattened
Captions as SRT, VTT or SAMIExport > Export CaptionsImport as captions or titles
Zipped projectFile > Export > Zipped Project, Project for Mac or Project for WindowsAnother copy of Camtasia only

TechSmith documents the caption export on its captions page and the zipped project in its project sharing article. Menu names differ a little between Windows and Mac, so check your version.

Move a Camtasia video to Premiere Pro

  1. Export the video. Export > Local File, MP4. Pick the same frame size and frame rate as the Premiere sequence you're cutting it into.
  2. Export the captions. Export > Export Captions, choose SRT, then Save (Windows) or Export (Mac).
  3. Import both in Premiere Pro. File > Import the MP4 and the SRT, and drag the captions onto the sequence above the video.

The video is one flattened clip. Cuts, callouts, cursor effects and zooms are baked into the picture, so you can't move a callout or retime a zoom in Premiere. To keep separate clips, export the parts you need as separate videos, or keep the edit in Camtasia.

Captions in Resolve, Final Cut and Avid

Camtasia's SRT works in more places than its video does:

Why the project file doesn't open in Premiere Pro

A Camtasia project lists the recordings, the clips on each track, their timing, and Camtasia's callouts and effects. Only Camtasia reads it. TechSmith doesn't publish the format, and no other editor opens it.

That's the gap a converter would close: the clips, cuts and timing as a Premiere Pro, Resolve or Final Cut timeline linked to your recordings. Whether we build it depends on how many people need it. Drop your .tscproj or .cmproj in the box above and we count it.

Older projects saved as .camproj don't open in Camtasia 2020 or later either. TechSmith's support article says to open them in Camtasia 9, 2018 or 2019 and save as .tscproj.

FAQ

Can Premiere Pro open a Camtasia project? No. Premiere Pro can't open .tscproj or .cmproj files, and Camtasia has no XML or EDL export. Export the video as MP4 and the captions as SRT, then import both in Premiere.

Can I export a Camtasia timeline to DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro? Not as an editable timeline. Camtasia exports rendered video and caption files only. Resolve and Final Cut import both.

How do I export captions from Camtasia? Choose Export > Export Captions, pick SRT, VTT or SAMI, and save. Premiere Pro and Resolve import the SRT directly.

Can Avid Media Composer use Camtasia captions? Not as SRT. Convert the SRT to Avid SubCap TXT with CutConvert, then import it with the SubCap effect.

Can CutConvert convert a .tscproj file? Not yet. Drop it in the request box on this page and we count it. The file stays on your computer; we record only its type and size.

What about a .cmproj from a Mac? A .cmproj is a folder that the Mac shows as one file, with the project inside. Drop the whole .cmproj in the request box. We note its name and type only and don't open it.
