How the outputs are chosen
Every converter on the site reads its input into one of two models, timed text or a timeline, and writes the output from that model. This page uses the same table the converters are tested against to list which outputs your file can reach, and for each one which properties survive. That is why the list is different for a VTT and for a Resolve project, and why an EDL only ever becomes a CSV of its events.
FAQ
How does it know what my file is?
By content, not by extension. A Whisper JSON and a Premiere transcript JSON both end in .json but are read differently; the page inspects the file and offers the outputs that its format can actually reach.
What does "Lossless" mean here?
Everything the input carries, such as timing, line breaks, styling, speaker names or word timings, survives into the output unchanged. When something does not survive, the list says which property changes and why, before you convert. The verdicts come from a capability table that every converter is tested against.
Why can I not convert an EDL to subtitles, or subtitles to a project?
An EDL is a cut list and captions are timed text; converting one into the other produces a file that opens but means nothing. Timeline formats (Premiere, Resolve, AAF, FCP7 XML) and caption formats only meet through FCPXML titles, which is the one bridge that carries real information.
What is a two-step route?
When a caption format has no direct writer for the output you picked, the page runs two converters back to back through SRT, for example SBV to SRT to Word. The route is shown under the loss list, and the losses of both steps are counted.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in your browser. The site only records the file name and size for metering, never the content.
What does it cost?
Files within the free size cap for their format convert free, guests get 5 a month and a free account has no monthly cap. Larger files take a $3 single conversion, a $7 pack of 10 up to 50 MB, or Pro at $9 a month.
